What is the average age of menopause?

Menopause can actually occur at any age but there are some statistics that have gathered to calculate the average of menopause in women.  There are two types of menopause to consider and they are natural menopause, when menstruation stops naturally, and induced menopause.  This occurs when both ovaries are removed medically.  The average age range of menopause that occurs naturally is between 48 and 55 years.

Premature menopause is defined when menopause occurs in women under the age of 40 years.  This is sometimes referred to as premature ovarian failure or POF.  Medical evidence suggests that premature menopause can be linked to genetics as well as autoimmune diseases where antibodies are developed against the body's tissues and cells.  This can cause POF in some women.

The age of menopause that is considered early menopause is between 40 and 48 years.  If you smoke, your mother experienced early menopause, you live at high altitude or your own period started later in life, you have an increased risk for early menopause.  There could be serious health risks if you experience induces, early or premature menopause.  For the latest information, speak with your doctor to ensure you are protected against heart disease and osteoporosis.
