HRT in perimenopause times – is it necessary?

Some women are asking if HRT in perimenopause times is necessary.  Let's define a few things first before we get into the answer.  Perimenopause is defined a as the period before menopause which occurs sometime between the ages of 35 and 50.  Or it is also defined as 5 - 10 years before menopause.  During this time, estrogen levels do drop but not to zero.  Estrogen continues to be produced by tissue around the ovaries, intestinal tract and fat cells.  Therefore, HRT in perimenopause times is not necessary.

If HRT (hormone replacement therapy) is used during perimenopause, there are a number of side effects that you should be aware of.  HRT can cause uterus and breast cancer, induce nausea or vomiting, make you depressed, make your breast tender and sore, retain fluids and cause dark spots on your skin.  Before considering HRT, be sure to check with your doctor to make sure your health is not in danger.

HRT in perimenopause times is simply not required.  If you are experience some menopause symptoms, there are a number of herbal remedies that have been known to help.  Chamomile and peppermint teas have been known to help with anxiety, for depression, try ginseng, dandelion root, cayenne pepper or ginger.  Before you take anything, it is recommended you speak with your doctor first.
