The tell take signs of menopause is often when your period stops. In fact, menopause actually means the last menstrual period. The clinical definition of what occurs when periods stop is that a woman's level of oestrogen and progesterone are too low to stimulate the lining of the womb into a normal cycle. Because the hormone levels fluctuate over several years, they eventually become low enough that the endometrium does not bleed. Therefore, your period stops.
The average age to start seeing signs of menopause is approximately 51 years old. This doesn't mean it can't happen earlier or later in life. Early menopause occurs in women 45 years and under and premature menopause happens at 40 or earlier. Perimenopause is the time from the beginning of menopausal symptoms to postmenopause - the time after your last period.

Some women experience only a few menopause symptoms while others experience all of them. You can choose to deal with your symptoms naturally or you can choose estrogen therapy only after consulting with your doctor.
Things that you can do to help you through menopause include:
- Exercise - increased levels of activity can help reduce hot flashes
- Eliminate fatty foods from your diet
- Eliminate hot or spicy foods from your diet
- Wear light clothing and layer it
- Have a cold drink, preferably water close at hand at all times
